Child Safety Tips

A great samurai once said…“To be successful in battle, one must know your enemy!”

A predator looks for the young and unattended.

Many parents leave their kids in the car for a second. Would you leave $5,000 cash sitting on your front seat for a second to run in for a coffee? Your kids are Priceless!!!

Make sure your child knows his or her full name, home phone number, your cell phone number and address.

Create rules for when your child is left home alone. They should “Never” open the door or answer the phone. Go over situations and post the rules.

Adults do not have to ask children questions in the street, ask for directions, post mail or help with groceries.

Go over lure scenarios…mail lure, animal lure, toy lure, directions lure, help me lure.

Teach your child no one (friends or family included) should approach or touch them in an inappropriate way, or in a way that makes them feel uncomfortable.

Empower you child to say ”No” to uncomfortable situations.

Role-play situations. Make sure your rules are black and white. Your child should not have to make a judgment call in a dangerous situation.

Teach your child about personal space, verbal and physical. The best weapon in an abduction situation is maintaining distance and making confident “Stay Away” statements.

Teach your child which adults to go to in case of an emergency…Police, store clerk, mom/dad with kids, teacher.

Teach your child how to “Go Bananas” in extreme situations. Make noise, yell out “Help Me! Your not my Parent! This person is trying to hurt me!” And to RUN, YELL, and TELL!

Establish rules for when they are playing in the neighborhood, where they can and can’t go, and to let you know if they are going anywhere else.

Establish rules for when you travel to public places and what to do if you get separated.

Teach your child a SECRET code word, only to be used in emergency situations.

Internet safety…Set ground rules for computer use. Teach them to never give out personal information over the internet.
